They stand accused of organising primaries to win the 2020 legislative election in a bid to use constitutional mechanisms to oust the government. Most have been detained for almost two years.

Thirty-one have pleaded guilty, 16 have entered not guilty pleas, whilst at least three will act as witnesses for the prosecution against their peers. They face a panel of three hand-picked judges, with no jury, and could be jailed for life. HKFP’s photographer was on the ground, as the trial got underway.
