Prepare for a brisk Lunar New Year, as the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) says that temperatures will continue to remain low over the holiday season. It issued the Cold Weather Warning at 4.20pm on Friday, advising people to stay warm. The Home Affairs department will keep 17 cold shelters open whilst the warning is in force.

The weather will be fine and dry, but also cold over the weekend. The minimum temperature is estimated to be around 11 degrees in urban areas, and colder in the New Territories.

Over Lunar Chinese New Year, the weather is expected to be very dry but even colder. The HKO estimates temperatures to be around 9 degrees in urban areas.

A winter monsoon now affecting Guangdong will get stronger over the weekend, causing temperatures to drop. Temperatures will then rise gradually from the middle of next week as a maritime airstream rolls into the south China coast.

Hong Kong was hit by record-breaking cold weather in January.
