A No.3 alarm fire broke out at a two-storey warehouse in Cheung Sha Wan on Friday injuring five people, as black smoke billowed from multiple windows and engulfed the area.

The warehouse at 1, Fat Tseung Street caught fire at around 2:00 p.m. Five people aged 11 and 62 were injured, police told HKFP – most felt unwell due to smoke inhalation. Of the five, two were firefighters.

Black smoke and a smell of sulphur still remained in the area at 4:30 p.m., according to an HKFP photographer on the scene.

Around 3,600 people from five neighbouring schools and residential buildings were evacuated with police assistance, police said.

They added that preliminary investigations showed that workers at the warehouse may have accidentally set fire to some items. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Residents were seen leaving their homes with pet dogs, cats and a parrot.

Some elderly residents were seen remaining in the area. By evening, the fire had been extinguised.
