To celebrate the Star Ferry’s 125th birthday in 2023, Hong Kong photographer Matthew Ng has spent the last two years taking photos of one of the city’s most notable icons in preparation for a book project.

“The Star Ferry has a special place in everyone’s heart,” Ng said, who shared with HKFP a preview of shots that will be featured in a book he plans on publishing in 2023 “as a token of love” for the cross-harbour passenger boat.

“For myself, I’ve been taking the Star Ferry since I was a little kid and now – as an adult – whenever I ride the Star Ferry to cross the harbour, it feels like a time machine and brings back memories.”

Ng had a rare glimpse of the uniforms, maintenance, and daily operations of the Star Ferry, which are often restricted from the public’s view.
