An art exhibit supporting the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement opened in New York City last Friday.
Entitled “We are all HongKongers,” the exhibit was a coordinated international effort by Hongkongers across the world. Teams from Hong Kong, Tokyo and London collaborated for months leading up to the show.
Hosted at a gallery in the city’s central Soho area, displays include graphic artworks, statues and video footage from Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrations which erupted last summer.
Also featured is a recreation of the Lennon Walls which sprouted across the city during the protests – colourful post-it note collages with messages of international support for the movement.
Another wall, dubbed the “Apple Daily wall,” was covered with copies of the newspaper’s pro-democracy advertisements and banners collected by activists in Hong Kong.
As part of the exhibit, the gallery will host a screening of the documentary “China’s Artful Dissent” on Friday. The film follows the activism of Chinese artist Badiucao last year. The artist is currently in exile in Australia.
The show is an initiative by a group of Hongkongers residing in New York called NYC Sings with You, a reference to the regular pop-up lunchtime protests in shopping malls across Hong Kong.
The 10-day exhibit will run until Sunday.
