Hong Kong has registered 30 new coronavirus infections, all involving people returning from Pakistan. This brought the city’s tally to 1,161 infections, with one probable case and five deaths.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) announced in a statement on Monday that the new cases involved 15 men and 15 women, aged one to 61 years old. All of them had travelled during their incubation and infectious periods. The CHP said it is following up with relevant epidemiological investigations and contact tracing.

Pakistan reported at least 181,088 coronavirus infections as of Monday, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. First detected in Hubei, China, more than 8.9 million people have been infected with Covid-19 globally, leading to 468,000 deaths.

Health authorities are also investigating an overseas case involving a 58-year-old man, who arrived in Hong Kong from the Philippines on flight CX906 on Sunday. The man tested positive for Covid-19 in the Philippines on Saturday and was sent to Queen Mary Hospital directly from the airport.

“Given that the situation of Covid-19 infection remains severe and that there is a continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong,” the CHP spokesperson said.

Fifth death

Separately, the city recorded its fifth coronavirus-related death over the weekend. The patient was a 78-year-old woman, who was confirmed to have Covid-19 on June 2 in connection with a cluster of local infections at Sha Tin’s Lek Yuen Estate.

The Hospital Authority (HA) said she had displayed symptoms of fever, shortness of breath and cough. Her condition later worsened and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on June 8, where she passed away on Saturday evening.

As of Monday noon, the HA said a total of 1,078 confirmed and suspected patients of Covid-19 had recovered and been discharged from hospital.

Correction 23:6: A previous version of this article stated the total number of infections was 1,062. It was 1,061 with one probable case.
