Eight students from a secondary school in Ma On Shan were arrested on Thursday after a video surfaced online of a student being assaulted.

The 38-second clip, which was posted on Facebook, showed a male student being trapped under two chairs. At least seven other students stripped off his pants and underwear, hit his buttocks and twisted his ear. The victim could be heard yelling while his assailants laughed.

Police arrested eight students from Yan Chai Hospital Tung Chi Ying Memorial Secondary School – whose ages ranged from 17 to 19 – for common assault. The students were released on bail on Thursday night, and must report to the police next month.

The school issued a statement on Thursday saying that it had investigated the incident and disciplined the students involved.

“After a thorough investigation, we found the incident did not involve bullying, and was only a game among students that went too far,” the school said.

“Nonetheless, such games may also constitute inappropriate behaviour, and the school has already disciplined and instructed the students involved so that the incident will not repeat in the future.”

The school added that it will work with social workers, educational psychologists, the Education Bureau and police as part of its crisis management effort.

According to reports by local media, the incident took place last March. However, the video was only recently posted onto a Facebook group, and a viewer reported the case to police.

In a statement, the Education Bureau expressed concern over the incident, and said the department had zero tolerance for campus bullying in any shape or form.
