The Observatory has warned of serious flooding in Tai Po as heavy showers and thunderstorms hit some areas on Thursday.

It recorded over 10 centimetres of rainfall in Tai Po between 10:45am and 1:45pm.

The Observatory warned that serious flooding may result from the heavy rain and advised residents to take necessary precautions to avoid flood damage.

It also advised staying away from watercourses and told drivers to be aware that there is likely to be serious road flooding and traffic congestion.

A Facebook user posted a photo of a minibus and a taxi in deep water on Tai Po Road near Tsung Tsai Yuen, saying that cars had stalled in both lanes at 11:40am.

The user later followed up with photos of a police vehicle on site, with a line of double-decker buses waiting to proceed in the background. They also showed the taxi and minibus being pushed manually.

The thunderstorm warning was issued on Thursday morning. A mainly cloudy afternoon is predicted, and evening with heavy showers and squally thunderstorms in isolated areas.

The weather with be hot with sunny periods and isolated showers over the next few days.
