Foreign consul generals in Hong Kong and Macau have have published video messages in celebration of Lunar New Year.

The US consulate general continued its tradition of making short videos for the festive season to ring in the new year.

In this year’s feature, Consul General Kurt Tong found that Lulu, “the good dog who is bad at sniffing out bombs,” had gone on strike and made a trip to Hong Kong for fun ahead of the Year of the Dog.

Lulu, unfortunately, lost her passport and had to go to the US consulate. Tong, who spoke in Cantonese, then invited Lulu for tea and introduced Hong Kong’s attractions.

2018 marked the 175th anniversary of the US Consulate in Hong Kong.

The Canadian Consulate published a video featuring Darcy the dog. As the camera zoomed out, top diplomat Jeff Nankivell explained: “Actually, I am the Consul General of Canada.”

Nankivell spoke in Cantonese, English and French. He urged people in Hong Kong and Macau to travel to Canada and enjoy its diverse culture: “Come to Canada this year for big luck!”

The Portuguese Consulate also posted a video on Monday wishing everyone a happy year of the Dog.

Consul General Vítor Sereno made his new year wishes in both Portuguese and Cantonese.

The UK consulate  posted a three second video wishing viewers a happy new year: “Kung Hei Fat Choi.”
