An “interview” with detained activist and former lawyer Jiang Tianyong was aired on state broadcaster CCTV on Thursday’s episode of China News. Click here for the full story.
Jiang’s quotes were part of a news segment concerning an “investigation” into allegations that lawyer Xie Yang was tortured. A voiceover stated that Jiang had admitted orchestrating the story and inciting Xie’s wife, Chen Guiqiu, to distribute the fabricated torture claims in October after he had edited them.
The video follows reports from state media ouetlets Global Times and Xinhua which claim that Jiang created lies to “cater to Western media.” Xinhua called the reports on Xie’s torture “fake news.” The CCTV segment shows reports from dissident-run sites including Boxun and New Citizens’ Movement as well as Telegram messages containing news of Xie’s torture in prison. Jiang’s wife and his legal team have condemned the interview, saying it was made whilst he had no access to legal representation or his family members. Xie’s lawyer Chen Jiangang told Reuters that the accounts of Xie’s torture were genuine.
