Tropical Cyclone Meranti is expected to edge closer to the coast of southern China in the middle of this week, the Observatory said at noon on Monday.

Meranti is expected to come within 400km of Hong Kong on Thursday, the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The cyclone is expected to weaken from a Super Typhoon to a Severe Typhoon on the same day, when it is closest to Hong Kong. Maximum wind speeds of up to 175 kilometres per hour is expected.

It will bring “windy weather and squally showers to the region during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after,” said the Observatory.
The Observatory also warned that “the change in weather may affect outdoor activities during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the day after.”
