A man surnamed Liu, claiming to be a member of the election team of Gary Hau Chi-keung, was beaten up at around 1am on Friday, Apple Daily has reported. Hau is running as an independent candidate in New Territories East in the Legislative Council elections this Sunday.

Liu was returning home when two men wearing masks beat him up, leaving injuries to his hands and limbs, Liu’s wife told the newspaper. He had been drinking with his friends prior to the incident.

Liu was reportedly told “not to drive into Sheng Shui Wai” by the men.

Hau, chairman of the Sheung Shui District Rural Committee, was a former member of the pro-Beijing Liberal Party. However, he is running as an independent candidate, saying that other parties have failed to act in the interests of New Territories indigenous villagers.
