A Chinese man, surnamed Zhang, attempted to open a plane door during a quarrel with his girlfriend in an attempt to harm himself last Sunday, according to Chinese media.
The pair were on Air China’s flight CA4169, which was headed to Beijing from Chongqing, in Sichuan province.
According to his partner, surnamed Wu, the two started quarrelling as the flight attendants were serving food. Wu told reporters that she had said to Zhang: “Maybe we are not fit for each other, let’s calm down for two days. And then he stood up, [and said] I will kill myself now, do you believe me?”
Zhang then ran towards plane door and attempted to open it.
He later said: “[A]t that time, I did not actually think to jump down – I just want to scare her. At that time, I was especially angry, so I passed over her and pushed down on the door handle, maybe it was too extreme.”
According to Chinese media, Zhang is jailed for 15 days for his unauthorised use of plane facilities, and Wu was fined RMB200 (HK$232) for disturbing order on transportation.
