A woman has given birth in a bathroom of an aeroplane as it was moving to the runway.

The woman, aboard Shenzhen Airlines flight ZH9215, was set to fly from Nanjing to Guiyang on Tuesday afternoon. Flight attendant Shao Xiaolu told the Guangzhou Daily that as the aircraft prepared for take-off, the woman headed for the bathroom, where she gave birth. The plane promptly returned to the aircraft apron.

As the lavatory is not meant to be used during take-off procedures, a flight attendant named Lu Haili knocked on the door and asked her to come out as soon as possible.

However, he heard a baby crying, which led to the flight crew opening the lavatory from the outside. Emergency measures were applied to sever the umbilical cord between the mother and baby.

The two were sent to a hospital in Nanjing in order to monitor their condition. The flight departed at 9pm, about five hours later than the scheduled flight time.
