The Hong Kong Observatory said a winter monsoon is bringing cold and dry weather to the south China coastal areas. The highest temperature on Friday will be a crisp 15 degrees Celsius, with temperatures expected to stay cold this weekend and gradually rise to above 20 degrees Celsius towards Christmas.

A cold weather warning and a fire danger alert have been in force since Wednesday.

The lowest temperature ever recorded at the Observatory was zero degrees Celsius on January 18, 1893.
