A large fire broke out at a wholesale food market in Shanghai at around 9:00pm on Wednesday evening. The blaze was visible from hundreds of metres away, according to pictures posted on social media.

Around a dozen fire engines were dispatched to battle the blaze, Shanghai News Online reported, citing eyewitnesses.

A student at nearby Fudan University said on the Twitter-like Weibo that students had been evacuated from their campus dormitories.

At 11:23pm, police said the fire has been put out and that no one was injured.
“Nearby residents have not been affected and the cause of the blaze is under investigation,” the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said on its official Weibo account.
