A University of Hong Kong pathology professor was declared dead in his bathroom by police on Sunday after they were called to attend by his wife. Professor Chan Li-chong’s body was found in the bathroom of his home on Victoria Road, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported. The incident appeared to be suicide, though no note was found.

HKET cited sources as saying that the 62-year-old suffered from mood disorders.

Chan, Chair of Pathology and Director of Centre for the Humanities and Medicine, started teaching at HKU in 1989. He was given the Ron Harden Innovation in Medical Education Award at the International Medical Education Conference in 2010 and an Outstanding Teaching Award by HKU in 2013.

In an internal email, Dean of the Li Ka-shing Faculty of Medicine Gabriel Leung hailed Chan as a highly respected professor and “a pioneer in medical [education] reform,” HKET reported.
